Captain summary:St. Mary’s had made it to the highest league in the club’s history RD1NE. What did the season hold ahead of us. Before the season started there was the disappointment that the key club opener Marc Minikin, top scorer in 2017 and an ever present member of the team had decided to play elsewhere. To add to the problems our other star opener Tom Lee broke his finger in the first over of the season away to Easton & Martyr Worthy and this put him out for 5 weeks. Standing up to the task a number of players Oli Neal, Russell Hawkins and Dan Staff all took on the role of openers.

The season was blighted by problems getting teams out. Most weeks it was a struggle to get 11 and for two matches Rotherwick & Crown Taverners we had to play with only 8 players. Remarkably we beat Crown Taverners in a remarkable match that those who played in it will never forget.

Despite the problems getting teams out the team did very well in the league winning 7 and tieing one remarkable match at Hartley Wintney where Nathan Field with the bat dug us from what looked like certain defeat to the verge of victory to lose his middle stump with the scores level. Despite the inconsistencies and troubles getting a team we easily held our own against the teams in the league, beating eventual champions Holybourne and narrowly losing to Colden Common. In fact it was the teams below us St. Cross Symondians, Ropley & Overton who we had least success against.

In terms of key performances there are so many who did their bit, Tom Lee topped the batting and Nathan Field the bowling and Stephen Reid was an outstanding all-rounder. But many others put in great performances with bat and ball and in the field.

What is in store for next season has to be determined? Will we be able to field a team each week? These are questions to be answered over the winter. I really hope that St. Mary’s will continue as a team. It has been a key part of my life for so many years, and there are so many great friends I do not want to walk away from. But we do have to answer the question as to getting a team each week.

Thanks goes especially to Oli who took over the stressful task of getting the 11 each week - thanks Oli.
